What Is Bonding Primer?

Bonding Primer is a specialty coating that helps paint stick to smooth, glossy, or difficult surfaces. It creates a firm base between the surface and the finish paint. Painters use it on materials such as laminate, painted wood, metal, and some plastics when regular primer may not grip well.

Local relevance: Bellevue's damp winter climate can leave cabinet surfaces with moisture or residue, so surfaces must dry fully before bonding primer is applied.

Key Takeaways About Bonding Primer

  • It grips smooth surfaces with limited porosity.
  • Surface cleaning and light sanding still matter.
  • Bonding primer is not the same as drywall primer.

How Bonding Primer Works

Bonding primer contains resins that form a strong grip on surfaces with few pores. After the primer dries, finish paint has a more stable base. The coating does not hide grease, dust, loose paint, or deep damage.

Cabinet painters may use bonding primer on laminate, factory-finished wood, or previously painted doors. The surface still needs cleaning, sanding, and repairs before priming. Good coverage means the primer forms an even film without bare spots, runs, or heavy buildup.

Bonding Primer and Other Primers

Drywall primer is made for porous joint compound and fresh drywall. Bonding primer serves hard-to-coat surfaces. An epoxy primer is another specialty product with different resin chemistry and uses.

From the Thomas J. Painting team

When we prepare cabinets, we check the existing finish, remove surface residue, and scuff smooth areas. We apply bonding primer only after the surface is clean and sound. Our team also checks the dried film for even coverage before applying cabinet paint.

Bonding Primer in Practice: A Real-World Example

A laminate cabinet door may feel smooth and shed ordinary paint during use. Bonding primer gives the cabinet paint a firm base after the door is cleaned, lightly sanded, and repaired.
