What Is a Primer?

A primer is a preparatory coating applied before paint to help the finish bond, cover stains, and create a more even surface. Primer can seal porous drywall, wood, and patched areas. The right product depends on the surface, existing coating, and problem being addressed before interior paint is applied.

Local relevance: Bellevue's damp Pacific Northwest winters can leave interior surfaces slower to dry, so primer application depends on a clean, dry surface.

Key Takeaways About Primer

  • Primer prepares surfaces before the finish coat.
  • Porous or patched areas may absorb paint unevenly.
  • Primer is not the same as finish paint.

How Primer Works

Primer forms a base layer between the surface and the finish paint. The coating fills small pores and creates a more consistent surface, so the finish coat can spread evenly. Primer also helps limit color changes caused by patched drywall, bare wood, or stains.

Related glossary terms: Acrylic Paint, Binder, Paint Adhesion.

Paint professionals choose primer based on the surface condition and the type of problem present. A water-based latex paint system may suit many interior walls, while an oil-based product can help with certain wood stains. Paint adhesion improves when the surface is clean, dry, and properly prepared.

Expert Note

When we inspect an interior surface, we look for porosity, stains, patched areas, and signs of weak adhesion. We match the primer to the surface and allow the coating to dry before applying finish paint. Our team also checks the primed area for missed spots or uneven absorption.

Primer in Practice: A Real-World Example

A repaired drywall section may absorb interior paint differently from the surrounding wall. We can prime the repair so the finish coat has a more even appearance across the room.
