What Is Etching?

Etching is a surface preparation process that opens the pores of concrete so a coating can bond more securely. A mild acid solution reacts with the top layer, creating a fine texture. The surface is then rinsed and allowed to dry before epoxy or another coating is applied.

Local relevance: Bellevue's damp climate can leave concrete with surface moisture, so garage floor preparation must include a careful dryness check before etching and coating.

Key Takeaways About Etching

  • Etching changes the concrete surface, not the coating itself.
  • Clean, dry concrete helps the process work as intended.
  • Etching isn't the same as simply washing the floor.

How Etching Works

Cleaning tools and test supplies are arranged around a dirty floor sample on a work surface

Etching uses a mild acid solution to react with the surface of cured concrete. The reaction opens small pores and creates a light texture. That texture gives a coating more surface area for bonding.

Before etching, the floor must be free of oil, dirt, paint, and other residue. After the solution works, the surface is rinsed well and checked for leftover dust or residue. Concrete preparation also includes allowing the slab to dry before epoxy coating is applied.

Etching works best on clean, absorbent concrete. A sealed or heavily contaminated floor may need another preparation method. The right method depends on the slab's condition and the coating system.

From the Thomas J. Painting team

When we prepare a garage floor, we check whether water can enter the concrete surface. We remove residue before etching, then inspect the slab for remaining dust, weak areas, or moisture. We only move forward when the surface is clean and ready for the coating system.

Etching in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner has a bare concrete garage floor with light dirt and oil residue. The floor is cleaned, etched, rinsed, and dried so the epoxy coating has a properly prepared surface.
