What Is Orange Peel?

Orange Peel is a drywall texture with small, raised bumps that resemble an orange's skin. A sprayer applies a thin layer of joint compound or texture material to walls or ceilings. The finish softens flat surfaces, hides minor surface marks, and creates a consistent pattern before primer and paint are applied.

Key Takeaways About Orange Peel

  • Its fine bumps create a light, even surface pattern.
  • Spray pressure and material thickness shape the final texture.
  • Orange Peel isn't the same as knockdown texture.

How Orange Peel Works

A man in a cap points at a textured sample while a woman in a denim jacket listens at a worktable

Orange Peel forms when a sprayer spreads small droplets of drywall compound across a prepared surface. The droplets partly level as they settle, leaving a fine pattern of raised bumps. Spray pressure, material thickness, and nozzle settings affect the texture.

A light texture may cover minor marks while keeping the wall easy to paint. A heavier texture creates more visible bumps and needs careful matching during repairs. The surface must dry before primer and paint are applied. Drywall Compound provides the textured material, while a Texture Coat creates the finished pattern.

From the Thomas J. Painting team

When we work with Orange Peel, we check the existing pattern before applying new texture. We adjust the spray pattern and material consistency to blend repairs with nearby drywall. Our team also checks the dried surface under normal room light before painting.

Orange Peel in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner has a patched section on a textured hallway wall. The drywall texturing process applies Orange Peel to the repair, so the area blends with the surrounding surface before the wall is painted.
