What Is VOC?

VOC is a volatile organic compound that can evaporate into indoor air from products such as paint, coatings, adhesives, and cleaners. In interior painting, VOC describes chemical compounds released as paint dries and cures. Paint formulas with lower VOC content usually release fewer of these compounds during application and drying.

Local relevance: Bellevue's damp winter weather can slow interior drying, so ventilation and product instructions matter during indoor painting.

Key Takeaways About VOC

  • VOC refers to airborne compounds released by some paint ingredients.
  • Paint can release VOCs during drying and curing.
  • Low odor does not always mean zero VOC.

How VOC Works

A hand holds a card reading “VOC” over a desk with a computer, paint can, and pencil

VOC enters indoor air when certain liquid ingredients in paint evaporate during drying. The compounds leave the wet coating and become part of the surrounding air. Some VOCs can also be released as the paint continues to cure.

Related glossary terms: Acrylic Paint, Latex Paint, Primer.

Paint labels may describe VOC content, emissions, or a low-VOC formula. These terms describe related but different details. VOC content concerns the ingredients in the wet product. Emissions describe what the coating releases into the air. Latex Paint and Primer may both have VOC information on their labels.

  • Ventilation helps replace indoor air during painting.
  • Drying and curing are separate parts of the coating process.

Expert Note

When we plan interior painting, we review the product label and discuss the room's ventilation. We follow the coating instructions for application and drying. Our team also considers how the space will be used while paint dries, especially in occupied homes.

VOC in Practice: A Real-World Example

A bedroom painted with a low-VOC interior coating may still release some compounds while the coating dries. Opening suitable ventilation paths can help move indoor air during that process.
